Dark matter… It’s something you may have heard discussed in recent science fiction films , but you’re not sure what it is, which is okay, since scientists don’t know either. What they do know is that dark matter makes up about 80% of the universe and doesn’t emit light or energy and exists in a space that’s wholly unique and unexplored – which is kind of like Dark Matter Coffee.

Their Meddle Coffee bar has been described as “psychodelegant,” which accurately describes the psychedelic neon lighting of coffee signs mixed with the elegant wallpaper and garden mural artwork.

Dark Matter Coffee is a Chicago-based coffee brand with five locations throughout the city, and they’re exploring those dark matter spaces in the coffee scene with their shops and brews. Opened in 2017, Dark Matter is all about sustainable and fair business practices that bring the best coffee from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico to the Windy City. They like to experiment with their coffee which allows visitors to try a mix of low, medium, and high fermentation coffees, and occasionally barrel-aged coffees – something that’s quite unique in the café scene.

As for their five cafes, they go above and beyond in style. Their Meddle Coffee bar has been described as “psychodelegant,” which accurately describes the psychedelic neon lighting of coffee signs mixed with the elegant wallpaper and garden mural artwork. Their Electric Mud shop has an electric neon yellow sign and a theme that pays tribute to Chicago’s Blues scene. Even the name references Chicago Blues musician, Muddy Waters. And their Mad West shop set in the United Center’s public atrium? It’s the perfect retreat for a coffee-loving sports fan as its decked out in rad murals that relate to the Chicago sports scene.

Hit up any of their cafes and you’ll see a diverse selection of hot and iced coffee options, teas, espresso beverages, barrel-aged iced coffees, agave lattes, and signatures like the Hopped Chocolate City, a signature cold brew with hops. They also serve up Do-Rite Donuts and baked goods from West Town Bakery at some of their shops.

Just because you can’t see dark matter doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Dark Matter Coffee in Chicago saw something in the coffee scene that wasn’t there – a new type of coffee shop that blends killer designs with unique coffee-making processes – and they made it visible for all who visit Chicago.
