In the early 1900s, a different kind of man walked through the North Loop in Minneapolis. Lumbermen, millers, merchants, and boom masters bustled through the neighborhood, wheeling and dealing and working hard to make Minneapolis into what it’s become today.

These days, artists, professionals, and entrepreneurs walk, live, and visit the North Loop, and while the faces of the neighborhood have changed, there’s still some places that pay tribute to the working men of the past and celebrate the artistry of the neighborhood today.

One such place is Hewing Hotel.

Set in a majestic brick building, the Hewing Hotel occupies the Jackson Building; a former farm implement showroom and warehouse built in 1897. Today, the interior has some lasting elements of this prior farm warehouse where trains once rolled through the building’s basement. It appears in the giant pine beams of the interior, the brick-exposed walls, tall ceilings, and original industrial elements.

While the design has some very turn-of-the-century elements, it appeals to the current artsy and professional atmosphere of the neighborhood with stylish pieces of furniture, edgy lighting fixtures, and  artwork by local Minnesota artists and photographers.

When not enjoying the king or double queen beds with SERTA Sapphire mattresses, woolen throws, locally-curated private bars, and spacious bathrooms, visitors have plenty of amenities to experience on-site.

Guests can burn calories at the fitness center, catch sun rays at the rooftop pool, or relax at the Nordic-style sauna. A pre-dinner craft cocktail hits the spot before having a meal of Scandinavian-inspired cuisine at Tullibee, the hotel’s restaurant and bar.

Where some hotels wipe away any trace of the past, the CYTIES traveler will appreciate the Hewing Hotel for how it mixes style and modern-day artistry with the working-class spirit.
