Commonwealth Coffeehouse is about so much more than just coffee. They are about community, an experience, an undying element of interaction. As caffeine consumers, we have choices when we wake up. For most of us, the first decision — even before deciding whether we want to hit the snooze button one more time — is how we are going to obtain our morning lightning, our liquid heat stroke, our iced caffeinated jolt into reality. Are we going to power up our coffee machines and throw in some roasted beans, or are we taking a trip into the realm of humanity?

There is a feeling you get when  the familiar face of the barista you see every morning knows your name, when the ghosts you brush shoulders with become more than people, they become friends. It’s the journey you take to reach an environment that becomes a home away from home. So when opening Commonwealth, the owners could find no better place than the residential street of Davis Court, where they bought an actual house.

From the outside, it looks as if you are walking up to your neighbor’s front door to ask politely for cream or sugar. If you see the “open” sign illuminated, don’t bother knocking, just walk on in. The color white introduces herself to the tones of brown wood in the Spanish-design interior, harmonized with an industrial vintage look.

There is plenty of seating inside, but if you prefer fresh air and the sounds that come with it, head up front to the patio or find a seat in the backyard. The back offers a wooden pergola for protection from a sometimes-angry sun and is accompanied by a small garden and plenty of plants.

While the setting and community are important, the morning brew is what gets us there. They use one of our favorite coffees, Cuvée Coffee, who roast just up I-35 in Austin, Texas. Their outstanding coffee can be matched with breakfast tacos and French pastries.
