BY: Alex Temblador Contributing writerSomeone must be the first to succeed, and life is waiting for YOU to snatch up that helm and make a name for yourself. That’s what Trumbull and Porter did. As Detroit’s first artisan boutique hotel, it was the first to bring about the hotel renaissance of Michigan’s most important city. Trumbull and Porter saw Detroit changing from the ground up, moving away from the automotive industry into a city that has a strong future in art, music, and culture, and they stepped in to provide a space for travelers who would be enticed by Detroit of the 21st century.
The hotel’s new digs and creative spaces are deeply entrenched in the city and state, which is no surprise with its location in Corktown, Detroit’s oldest neighborhood that has an artsy, up-and-coming vibe. There’s a simplistic aspect to the design with a little bit of warehouse chic combined with colorful pieces for the appreciating eye.
Cozy around a cowboy kettle campfire with your partner or someone you just met as you listen to tunes that reverberate through the Detroit air.
Trumbull and Porter has found ways to incorporate the local community in their property. You’ll be able to rent a bike from Detroit Bikes and relax in the rooms on custom-built furniture made by Michigan artists. The masculine color tone of the rooms is brightened with colorful rugs and local art on the walls, while safes, free Wi-Fi, fridges, desks, robes, and flat-screen TVs provide the care and comfort CYTIES travelers in Detroit deserve.
When you’re not hitting up their 24/7 fitness center, head to Red Dunn Kitchen for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and enjoy seasonal American cuisine. Grab a cocktail to enjoy in the courtyard, a live-music venue, but be sure to stop at the Outdoor Pump Room to see murals by Detroit artists. And when you wake up at Trumbull and Porter and make your way downstairs to the Burroughs, the hotel’s espresso bar, grab a cup of Cadillac coffee and a pastry, and head out for a walk in the city.
During your walk, take note of Detroit, and how the city is building on layers of history, grit, and grind. Standing tall within the development is Trumbull and Porter – a hotel that staked a claim as a “first” of Detroit, a hotel that just might inspire you to do the same.
