BY: Alex Temblador Contributing writerThere’s more to a man than what meets the eye. His clothes, job, and home may say one thing to the world, but who is on the inside – that could be another person entirely. We live in a world where appearances, reputations, or our past actions dictate what people think or expect of us. Take Detroit, for example. Nicknamed the “Motor City,” Detroit’s ties to the auto industry sometimes hijacks every other aspect of its history and current touristic draw. Like men, there’s more to Detroit than meets the eye, and we can prove it, by telling you about Astro Coffee.
Whether you are a coffee connoisseur or not, you won’t be limited by coffee options here. They feature a variety of roasters that change seasonally
Astro Coffee is a small café located in the historic Corktown neighborhood, the oldest neighborhood in Detroit. It’s no surprise that Astro Coffee has made a home here. Corktown is slashing preconceived ideas of Detroit – a wasteland, crime ridden, bleak – with a delightful style, an active calendar, and amazing spots like Astro Coffee.
Charming is the most accurate way to describe Astro Coffee. It has a rustic design, formed by the combination of exposed brick walls, wooden elements, and greenery overflowing in pots. And it’s all brightened with stunning chalk mural art work along the shop’s black walls. They change often but have featured killer pieces like a person wearing a crane outfit, a collage of sea animals, or a group of creatures on a boat ride under a rainbow.
Now to the coffee part…
Whether you are a coffee connoisseur or not, you won’t be limited by coffee options here. They feature a variety of roasters that change seasonally, but you’ll most likely find Ritual Coffee Roasters, Anthology Coffee, Sightglass Coffee Roasters, George Howell Coffee, and Heart Roasters. Macchiato, espresso, latte, pour overs, Astro Coffee can prepare your caffeinated brew however you like. Don’t forget to check out their selection of Joseph Wesley Tea, a Detroit-based tea company.
If you’re hungry, they do offer a spattering of sandwiches and an awesome selection of desserts that include everything from cakes to tarts, cookies, scones, and even packzis (Polish doughnuts with filling). Vegan brothers – they have options for you, too!
After grabbing your order, find a spot to sit and enjoy your drinks and dessert. Let the laidback, happy atmosphere and bad ass coffee wash away those preconceived notions of Detroit. There’s culture and art in the Motor City – and if you can find it in a cup of coffee at Astro Coffee, you’ll find it in more places, too.
