Joy Division: Unknown Pleasures

Unknown Pleasures was literally that, an unfamiliar indulgence of synth-pop that the band whole-heatedly questioned after the album was produced. After three weeks of recording —what would soon become an indie landmark — the band was unconvinced with the direction that Hannett had taken the album. In the end, they trusted his haunting vision and the depth it gave their sound. The album has continued to manifest its way into cinema and on catwalks as well as influenced countless goth bands. To get there wasn’t easy. Hannett’s eccentric methods included messing with the studio heating so that the band regularly suffered extreme temperatures. It’s safe to say whatever he did worked, as the album is still as hot today as ever.

Talking Heads / Fear of Music

Fear of Music was recorded at various locations in New York City during April and May 1979, taking Talking Heads in a darker direction than any previous albums. The first track ‘I Zimbra’ weaves chanting funk with an afrobeat, needless to say, it comes flying out of the gates. Byrne possesses the amazing feat to make apocalyptic and desolate messages sound playful and colorful, this found so evident in Life During Wartime. Other standout tracks include the alluring and bizarre Air, Paper, and the wildly vocalized Animals. A close listen will reveal the album laying the groundwork for the future path for Talking Heads, and perhaps the grand satire of Fear of Music is the message within—that music is the power to never be feared and can unite rather than divide the planet against any threat.

The relationship between a photographer and the person they are capturing is distinct. At times, a photography shoot can last just over a few hours or a day.
