BY: Alex Temblador Contributing writerMale musicians have always been two things – musically talented, of course, and fashion icons. Their joy, anger, anxiety, and creative genius rings loud through a microphone and instrument as much as it does through the color, pattern, and cut of their fashion choices. In Austin, the live music capital, visitors will often see how music and fashion intertwine on and off the stage as musicians move throughout the city. But what if we told you this phenomenon occurs in Austin hotels, too? Or at least one – the Kimpton Hotel Van Zandt.
And like a true music fashion icon, the Kimpton Hotel Van Zandt hit us with a new look, a new sound, a new amenity at every turn.
Kimpton Hotel Van Zandt is located a block off the hip and beloved Rainey Street, and it’s hitting every note. As a Kimpton, we wouldn’t expect anything less than upscale style and this property doesn’t disappoint. The lobby is a sexy affair with wooden floors and exposed gray brick. Navy and gray accents dominate the spaces but are elevated with dark woods and bronze elements.
The guest rooms are posh, but comfortable, with views of downtown or Lady Bird Lake. We relaxed into the white beds, had a drink from our minibar as we sat in the plush blue chairs, and stood under the hot spray of the large walk-in shower, washing off the grime and sweat from a night out on the town, a hard workout in the gym, or a day of meetings in downtown. With free Wi-Fi, Bluetooth speakers, and flat-screen TVs, our needs were met at every turn.
And like a true music fashion icon, the Kimpton Hotel Van Zandt hit us with a new look, a new sound, a new amenity at every turn. In the mornings, Café 605 hooked us up with the brown liquid of the gods (coffee, of course) and sent us into the day with breakfast and snacks. A dip in the rooftop pool offered a mid-day pick-me up with views of Lady Bird Lake and downtown Austin, a relaxed vibe, and full-service bar.
At night, we heard the sexy voice of Geraldine’s, the hotel’s main restaurant. Okay, it might have been the voices of their live bands that brought us into the upscale spot. We swayed to soulful sounds as we chowed down on Austin’s favorite dishes.
Bob Dylan, Prince, David Bowie, Elvis Presely, Frank Sinatra, Pharrell, or Stevie Wonder – we all remember these men for their musical talent and exceptional style and how the two blended to create a legacy, an icon. Kimpton Hotel Van Zandt is trying to do the same in the hotel scene of the musically-influenced city of Austin, and if it was up to us, we’d say they hit gold.
