Just a stone’s throw from the house where Ben Affleck and Matt Damon wrote Good Will Hunting stands Eagle Rock’s new favorite cocktail bar. Run off of a menu of streamlined craft cocktails, brews, and vino with no lack of class or charisma in sight, The Grant is bringing good vibes and even better times to the ever-expanding neighborhood.

Even in areas overflowing with nightclubs from the high-end to the down-low like Hollywood and Downtown LA, craft cocktail bars of all themes and specialties have been popping up like dandelions around Los Angeles in the last decade or so. While it appears that the industry is on the tail end of its cocktail renaissance, and has been for a while, it seems that all the songs have already been sung where it pertains to innovative bar programs. However, what has come from this is something interesting and exciting in its own way–where frills are few, and understated expertise seals the deal.

Following suit of neighborhoods like nearby Highland Park, Eagle Rock has been going through changes while in the midst of its own renaissance. While still a relatively quiet, family-oriented community, an influx of breweries, bars, and niche retail have integrated a youthful yet measured atmosphere with creativity around every corner. As a perfect testament to what can be accomplished when you know exactly what you want to be, The Grant gives you everything you need and nothing you don’t. Taking the form of a charming and easygoing lounge as the daylight remains, literally shedding light on the soon-to-be fruits of your labor, and transforming by night into a moody and mysterious parlor, The Grant has the properly mixed appeal to graciously welcome folks from all over town.

Twists on the traditional and a glorious assemblage of all things boozy call for an easily-digestible mix of simplicity and style. The folks behind the stick know their way around a shaker tin and are surely qualified to guide you fully or meet you halfway. Posed as a proper mezcal margarita, The Secret Weapon is a must for a hot summer night, where the more spirit-forward Chimney Sweep takes the shape of a classic Little Italy, which is essentially a Manhattan made with Cynar. New-age practices are reflected in draft wines and low ABV cocktails structured with amaro and bubbles, while purists can enjoy local beers and mid to high-end wines by the bottle or glass.

Although The Grant doesn’t house a full kitchen, you can fend off peckish tendencies with a small selection of bar snacks such as gorgonzola stuffed olives and Bub & Grandma’s homemade focaccia – likely an ode to the owner’s family traditions. If you’re lucky (or you follow their moves on the ‘gram) you’ll walk in on a pop-up for an up-and-coming liquor brand or local eatery they’re hosting. Happy hour specials run every single day from 4 pm-6 pm including simple cocktails, tap beer, and tap wine. We don’t exactly live in a time where a $4 craft beer is easy to find, so it would simply be irresponsible to miss out on such a thing. Best for small groups or date night considering that seating usually fills up pretty fast even on weekdays, live a little and explore what this lovely neighborhood haunt has to offer you.
