Parental Advisory, Explicit Writing: No Ghost Bears does not f*ck around. They have style, and it comes easily to the tight-knit crew that runs it. With a name so out of the ordinary, it immediately draws curiosity to what this DTLA coffee operation on East 8th Street is all about. Look for the weathered wooden sign adorned with a bold statement F*ck Traffic, Get Coffee. This eclectic neon pink coffee-brewing hangout serves Suits & Knives Coffee, and take it from us, the liquid creations taste as smooth and sharp as the name.

An accurate representation of the alternative and artistic wave in DTLA catering to creatives of all kinds.

Be sure to take a close look at the hardware — No Ghost Bears easily has the coolest espresso machine to be found. Local artist Mikolaj Wyszynski went to town on the device, decking it out with comic images of Metal Slug and anti-heroes from The Watchmen. Stories of LA life written everywhere in the shop, from the walls to the badass as the tattoos on the staff. Speaking of the team, these aren’t coffee newbies poached from the rookie squad, these are coffee street smart souls who use methods you can’t teach in a Coffee for Dummies book. The space is airy and modern with outside seating to listen to city sounds and zone out to a view of the Santee Court Apartments — above anything, it’s real, not plastic like a lot of corporate coffee waves found nowadays.

No Ghost Bears is bold and eccentric. An accurate representation of the alternative and artistic wave in DTLA catering to creatives of all kinds. Though the wall art boldly states “Shit People, Good Coffee,” it’s easy to see the sarcasm hidden within the statement. The people behind this spot are indeed the shit, and so are the bike-friendly clientele of true downtowners.
