Coffee, beer, wine, brunch. The worst thing about Commodity is that it isn’t open 24-hours a day. On your adventures through Long Beach, chances are this coffee shop is where every decent human you meet along the way started their day.

BY: Pete Whish Contributing writerA vintage Land Rover parked outside; it’s usually a good sign. A timeless utility vehicle of distinct style, the hard edges and no-nonsense design of the Land Rover act as an appropriate introduction to the minimalist combination of concrete, marble, and tile that awaits inside at Commodity Coffee.
As you enter, you notice a neon sign that reads ‘Coffee or Whatever.’ Don’t let this fool you, these guys take their coffee seriously, and serve it up with a grin. Thankfully, what’s missing is the snobby-ass mustachioed barista who genuinely believes that he has been sent from god for the sole purpose to brew the world’s finest cup of coffee… and charge you eight dollars for it. The team at Commodity are as warm as the caffeinated fuel they serve to the LBC community.
There may not be a scientific equation to prove it, but your life will be significantly better if you start every day with Commodity’s breakfast sandwich and a cup-o-joe.
Brace yourself, as the next two words take Commodity to the next level: Breakfast. Sandwich. Stacked on freshly baked bread, this no-nonsense egg, bacon and avocado sammy may actually be the only thing more addictive than the coffee on brew. There may not be a scientific equation to prove it, but your life will be significantly better if you start every day with Commodity’s breakfast sandwich and a cup-o-joe.
For your afternoon pitstop, Commodity also has a rotating selection of local beers, should you be seeking a buzz of a different kind. The large windows that line front of the shop brighten the space and are a great spot to sit back and enjoy a few beers.
Now that you’re sporting a fresh caffeine or beer-induced buzz, make a quick stop next door to Commodity’s friendly neighbor: Analog Records. With new and hard-to-find vintage vinyl, sifting through records at Analog is an easy way to waste away an afternoon.
Sip on a coffee, inhale a breakfast sandwich, crush a beer. The choice is yours, just be sure to snap a pic of the ‘COFFEE” mural on your way out.
